About 2 weeks ago, I stopped in at the KFC store in Spencer, Indiana on my way home after a three day conferance. I was anticipating picking up dinner for my hubby and myself. I made the choice to go inside to use the restroom since I had been on the road for several hours. When I went in, the first thing I noticed was that it was uncomfortably hot inside the store and the floors were sticky by the door. I proceeded to make my way to the restroom since there was a gentleman at the register ordering. The restrooms are located at the front by the kitchen area. The women's door was locked so I stood there waiting my turn. Since apparently there isn't a vent fan in the restroom you could literally hear everything inside that restroom. I heard the toilet paper dispenser being rolled, then the toilet flush and about 5 seconds later the door opened and an employee stepped out and immediately went into the kitchen. (I should have turned around and walked out at this point, might I point out that I did not mention hearing the water running to wash hands, nor the blower being used to dry the hands and after stepping into the restroom, there wasn't any handtowels to dry the hands Sad ). My only consoling thought at this point was at least they have to wear rubber gloves before touching the food. When I had finished in the restroom, I went out to the line to place my order. The gentleman was still there trying to place his order for chicken wings. I'm not sure what the hold up was, but he was having some kind of difficulty (as I am about to find out how inefficient the cashier is) getting his order for 6 chicken wings placed. After that ordeal was done, I was up next. I stepped up in front of the register waiting for the cashier to at least acknowledge I was there...she literally just stood there for several seconds...and I mean literally STOOD there, not saying anything...just stood there. Finally I asked her if she wanted to me to start my order. She smiled the stupidest smile I had ever seen and said yes. I told her I'd like two 3-piece boxes of chicken, one with cole slaw and green beans, the other with cole slaw and mashed potatoes and gravy. This order took approximately 5 seconds to get out but I noticed during that time the cashier was just standing there looking at me, not entering anything into the register. After I finished, I asked her if she needed something or was something wrong....she held her finger up (as thought to shush me-keep in mind I am a 58 year old business woman and this 18 year old twit is young enough to be my granddaughter...so don't you shush me). About that time, she starts trying to enter my order while she ineptly repeats back what she thought I said...she had nothing right, so I corrected her on both of the boxes. She finally managed to get the order entered and stepped back towards the kitchen area, all the while looking at me and then stepped forward and said "I'm sorry, we just got slammed". Since she has been acting strange from the get go, I'm not sure if "we just got slammed" is code for something or was she trying to tell me that they can't fill my order??!!?? I stood there and she said again, "we just got slammed", so I said "and???" she said that it might be awhile. I told her that was okay, I had already paid for my order and as painful as it was placing it, I wasn't looking forward to how long it would take to refund my money to go elsewhere. So....the wait begins. I hadn't realized that the few people sitting in the restaurant were actually customers that had placed orders and were waiting to get theirs to go. After about 5 minutes of me standing waiting on my order, a number was called that was prior to mine...a guy walked up and got his sack and walked off only to return a few seconds to ask AGAIN for some dipping sauce. And after that, another order number was called and a woman (who came in after I did and ordered some taco things and chicken stuff) came up to get her order. She walked back to one of the tables and came BACK UP to the counter and stood there waiting on the cashier to acknowledge that she was there...during this wait, she told me to MAKE sure that my order was complete before leaving the store as that store is notorious for leaving items that have been ordered out of the sack. She got the attention of the cashier and received her tacos that had not been put in the bag and left. Finally, a girl from the back came up front and asked the cashier who ordered the 3 piece boxes and the cashier pointed to me...the girl came over to me and said that while they were able to fill one of the 3 piece boxes, they didn't have enough chicken to fill the other order...all the while I'm standing there looking at a tall warmer case holding cooked chicken!!! When I pointed that out to her, she turned and looked at it and stood there for a few seconds and then turned back around and said "it's not the extra crispy". I said just give me some chicken. She walked to the back, was back there for about 2 minutes and then walked back up to the front, opened the door on the warmer case, picked through, picked up and turned several pieces of chicken over, finally decided on and grabbed 2 pieces of chicken and then walked back around to the area behind the cases. After several more minutes, my order was brought up to me and I left. This was by far the worst experience I've ever had at a KFC and pretty much at any fastfood chain restaurant. I had noticed a "ServeSafe" certificate hanging on the wall...but, as we all know, those certificates aren't worth the paper they are printed on if no one follows the guidelines and by the looks of the people in that store...I'd venture to guess no one that was working that night has ever been thru that course. I'm only saying this because years ago I was working at a nutrition director and had to complete the course and test out. I can assure you, from EVERYTHING I saw in that store, it should have been shut down by the board of health. There are too many cases of food poisoning being reported and it is because of negligence on the part of your employees and lack of supervision/direction that causes these issues. (Really, any moron that walks out of a bathroom and goes directly into a kitchen without washing their hands, needs to have their head examined, but more importantly, the moron that hired them should be fired for ever placing them in a position where they might be handling some one else's food). Seems to me that maybe the person that hired them and the person that didn't wash their hands needs to be out cleaning the lobby or picking up the trash and sweeping the parking lot, washing windows, tables, mopping the floor and wiping down the counters. The whole place felt like a toddler party had been thrown there just prior to my arrival.

I am honestly surprised that the board of Health hasn't shut this restaurant down due to the negligence on the food server's part and the employee's part that didn't wash their hands. Makes me wonder what kind of shady, inept and incompetent stuff is going on back behind the viewing eyes of the public.

I had filled out a survey on the back of the receipt with my concerns and received a reply back in an email that the seemed very generic and unsincere. I am copying it to this review for your information.

As you can read, I do not see any genuine concern and it makes me feel as though this is not being addressed as would be appropriate.

I received one follow up phone call from a person at the phone number of 317-793-****, I couldn't understand his name when he left a voicemail. I have returned his call two times and the calls go straight to voicemail. I have left messages both times; however, this person doesn't appear to be too concerned either because he has not followed up with any further contact...which doesn't really surprise me. It seems as though this whole company is on a fast downhill roll and it's just a matter of a very short while before all of your stores are bankrupt and out of business...and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if you don't have several outstanding lawsuits due to food poisoning. The $18-$19 bucks I spent at that store is a small price to pay for all the knowledge I gained. I've been telling everyone about how filthy the store is, how unprofessional the employees are and how non-chalant the corporate office is on all accounts.

If you want any further clarification (and are afraid to pop into your own store yourself) by all means call me-my cell is 812-264-****. I work during the day so you can leave a voice mail and I can call you back, or you can call in the evening.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Barb Scott
